Education

The Auckland Quilt Guild (AQG) provides educational opportunities for its members and engages with the wider community. Here’s a summary of our initiatives and offerings:

Mission:

  • Community Involvement: AQG is exploring ways to become more involved in the community. They welcome ideas from members on how to achieve this goal.
  • Open Classes: Some educational classes will be opened to individuals and groups with similar interests.
  • Outreach Opportunities: AQG is looking for events and places where members can utilise and further develop their skills.
  • Communication: Special classes and opportunities will be advertised on the AQG Facebook page and in the monthly members’ newsletter.

Classes:

  • Skill Development: Classes are designed to help members extend their skills or try something new, catering to all skill levels from beginners to masters.
  • Schedule: Classes are held on weekends and range from half-day to 2-day sessions throughout the year, typically from March through October. November features a special class on handwork suitable for Christmas gifts or decorations. No classes are scheduled around Christmas or during the summer break.
  • Suggestions and Tutoring: Members can suggest class ideas or volunteer to be tutors by contacting us at: education@aqg.org.nz.

Tutors:

  • Expertise: Tutors are highly skilled and come from within the Guild, across New Zealand, or internationally.
  • Collaborations: AQG collaborates with other New Zealand guilds to host internationally recognized tutors. For example, Rachel Daisy from Australia conducted workshops on her Pockets Full of Posies wall-hanging in 2023.
  • Local Talent: Esteemed local tutors like Chris Behersing and Barrie Ashton have provided tutorials on specific quilting techniques such as Free-Motion and Rulers quilting.
